Google Analytics for Zingtree: How to Set Up Demographic & Interest Reporting

Google Analytics is an industry-leading web analytics tool that gives you greater insight as to how users are interacting with just about any online or mobile property. Zingtree can use Google Analytics to allow you to get even more robust and powerful tracking data.

As part of this series, we will guide you through some of the Google Analytics basics, as well as information about how you can integrate Zingtree into your reporting process in a strategic way.


About Demographic & Interest Reports

Understanding your audience composition in terms of gender, age, and interests lets you also understand the kinds of content that you need to develop, as well as the language and tone. This information is also increasingly helpful from a support perspective — if, for example, we know that the target demographic for Acme Co. products is male and between 20 and 50, but we find that the majority of users interacting with Zingtrees are 40+, this may be indicative that the current product design and marketing isn’t working well for the older audience.

Enabling Demographic & Interest Reporting in Google Analytics

  1. Sign in to your Analytics account.
  2. Select the Admin tab.
  3. Navigate to the account and property where you want to use Demographic and Interests data.
  4. In the PROPERTY column, click Property Settings.
  5. Under Advertising Features, set Enable Demographics and Interests Reports to ON.
  6. Click Save.

Viewing Demographic & Interest Reports in Google Analytics

  1. Sign in to your Analytics account.
  2. Navigate to the account, property, and view where you want to use Demographic and Interests data.
  3. Click the Reporting tab.
  4. Open the Audience > Demographics > Overview report.
  5. Click Enable (above the introductory text).

Google Analytics for Zingtree: How to Set Up Goal Tracking for Tree Resolution

As part of this series, we will guide you through some of the Google Analytics basics, as well as information about how you can integrate Zingtree into your reporting process in a strategic way.


For those of you already familiar with Google Analytics, here’s a great tip that will allow you to assign tree resolutions as Goals. Setting up goal tracking for your trees will give you deeper insight about how different classes of users are interacting with your trees.

What is Goal Tracking?

Within the Google Analytics framework, here are goals explained:

Goals measure how well your site or app fulfills your target objectives. A goal represents a completed activity, called a conversion, that contributes to the success of your business. For more information, go here:

Setting Up Goal Tracking

1. Before you get started, make sure that you’ve updated the end nodes of your trees to determine “success” or “failure.” More details about how to do this can be found here:

2. In your Google Analytics account, head over to Admin in the top navigation, then Goals under the View options

3. From there, select +New Goal and then Custom from the Goal options.

4. In the Goal Description field, give your Goal a logical name and the select Event:

5. Populate the Event Category and Event Action, as specified below (for resolved trees).

6. Use the Verify feature to make sure that you have everything set up properly.

7. Click Save.

8. Create a new Goal for failed sessions by repeating the steps above. When you reach step 5, replace “success” with “failure”

A Few Notes About Google Analytics & Goals

  • Goal tracking will only apply to data that comes into Google Analytics AFTER the goal tracking is set up. It will not retroactively apply to old data.
  • When goal tracking is set up, you can begin segmenting your data by Goal Completion by selecting the “Goal Set x” option above the chart in most of your reports.

  • Quick disclaimer about interpreting your data: Due to the limitations of Google Analytics’ Event Tracking functionality, a “success” and “failure” event can be associated to the same session. Because events are fired based on when a page is viewed, if a user views a “success” and “failure” node in the same session, both events will appear in Google Analytics. In our experience, these instances are generally isolated, but feel free to also consult Zingtree’s internal reporting for more data about tree resolution.

About Tree Resolution

Zingtree empowers organizations to allow their users self-solve using dynamic, interactive decision trees. Allowing users to self-service their support needs not only cuts down on human resources, but has also been proven to lead to more satisfied customers.

To better understand how efficient your Zingtrees are at helping your customers get answers faster, it’s important to measure the results of your decision trees. You can do this labelling each node in your tree as a “success,” “failure,” or an “unknown result.”

Viewing Tree Resolution Data in Google Analytics

After you’ve configured your resolution nodes, Zingtree will automatically begin sending this information into Google Analytics in the Events interface:

Referencing the example below, we know that 95% of users that make it to the end of our decision trees are able to self-solve, which the remaining 5% require more assistance.

Decision Tree Analytics: About Traffic Map Reports

Zingtree has powerful built-in analytics. In this series, we’re taking a closer look at some of these in-depth reports and how they help you learn even more about how customers use your trees. 


Traffic Map Reports

The Traffic Map report shows a visual overview of the amount of traffic to each node in your particular decision tree. Set in the Zingtree Designer view, you can quickly access a complete view of the content in your decision tree nodes, as well as a breakdown of the traffic to each, shown in both number of clicks and percentage of total traffic.

To access the this report, go to Overview > Reports and select Traffic Map from the dropdown menu. You can specify an exact date range to pull the results from before clicking “Show Report.”

Because your report generates automatically in the Zingtree Designer, you can easily see how much traffic your tree nodes received at-a-glance — the thicker, heavier lines indicate more traffic, while the thinner lines show the least visited nodes.

Select “Buttons” to show or hide button labels from your view, depending on your preference.

If you’re looking at a more complex tree, get a closer or further view with the Zoom In / Zoom Out buttons.

And use the scroll bar to pan up / down or left / right as needed, which is also particularly helpful for larger decision trees.

Decision Tree Analytics: About the Session List Report

Zingtree has powerful built-in analytics capabilities. In this series, we’re taking a closer look at some of these in-depth reports and how they help you learn even more about how customers are using your trees. 


Session List Reports

This Zingtree report allows you to quickly and easily see every session for any given decision tree in your organization. Broken down in an easy-to-absorb list, you can navigate to each specific end-user session to learn more about how people use your tree, as well as get an overview of the amount of time users spent.

To access the Session List report, go to Overview > Reports and select Session List from the dropdown menu. You can specify an exact date range to pull the results from before clicking “Show Report.”

Once the report has generated, you can filter by Source/Agent to be shown sessions specific to an agent or other source. The Session List will give you a complete overview of every session within your filtered view, showing duration, clicks, results, and score when applicable.

The icons in your Results column will show you the exact end-result of each session: Customer was given a solution, Inconclusive, or Customer was unable to solve the problem.

Clicking on a specific Session # in the far left column will allow you to see complete click-by-click details for every node visited, as well as all data collected from that session.

Updates: New Button Click Traffic Report, Designer Enhancements and More

Here’s what’s new this week:

New Traffic (Button Clicks) Report

For each node, you can see how often each button is clicked for any date range.  Also, you can walk through your tree and see clicks for the next node. Thanks to Elise M. and Matthew S. for the suggestion.

Designer Updates

We’ve made the color palette better, and the root node is now a unique dark shade of green.  Thanks to Corey D. for the inspiration.

  • Fix: Mobile output looks better due to a meta tag scaling fix
  • Update: Reports list ordered by popularity
  • Fix: Super user status not always recognized in My Trees (h/t Trey H.)
  • Update: Added content-question and content-answer classes to tree output for more CSS control over question and content areas. (h/t Kolja W.)
  • Fix: Breadcrumbs links went back one step too far. Fixed. (Cris M.)
  • Update: Session Notes now turn red if there’s a previous note, shows previous note. Also appears in Session List, Session Data reports. (h/t Florent N.).
